When Damian and Joey started with us they were exhausted from travel and still came in and did their one on ones.
Damian came in with a willing, yet cautious mind and heart. He has made continuous progress since day one. He has spent the last few month focusing on adding some strength to his workouts and it sure has paid off. He has PR’D his snatch and made significant gains in other lifts and gymnastic movements.
When he is not working on making gains in the gym he is entertaining, creating delicious food, singing Karaoke, dancing or creating a welcoming home and making others always feel welcome, and most of all being an amazing father to little Caleb.
Thank you for hanging with us Damian, we enjoy having you and your family!
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is… get ready for this… Derek Damian Salas Francisco-Calvo. But please call me D haha! I’m 29 years old, and hail from the island of Guam. Before moving to Las Cruces, I called Las Vegas, NV my home, where I lived with my husband Joey for almost seven years. We’ve been in Cruces since 2015 and have absolutely loved everything about it so far!
How long have you been with us at DDCF and what made you walk in these doors?
I’ve been with the DesertDevil CrossFit family since January of 2017. At the time, the extent of knowledge I had of CrossFit was through a video I watched of my husband Joey doing a snatch while he was deployed…. I was horrified!! I immediately messaged him with an, “OMG! What are you doing?! That looks so dangerous! STOP!” After careful consideration (and constant haggle from Joey… just kidding) I decided what the heck! Just do it! So here I am. Boy has CrossFit changed my life.
Do you remember your first workout and how you felt after?
My first WOD was “Christine”. It consisted of 3 rounds for time of a 500 meter row, 12 deadlifts, and 21 box jumps. Post workout (and when I came back to life) I was ecstatic! I felt accomplished.
If you could design the perfect workout for yourself what would it be?
The perfect workout for me would consist of movements that I could use some improvement on and/or movements that I enjoy such as muscle ups, any kind of pull-up, snatches, handstand push-ups, all the cleans, double unders and toes-to-bar.
What animal best represents you today?
An animal? A dolphin! Because they’re smart, strong, and fabulooouuuus!
If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Oh anything Mariah Carey for sure!!! And of course if I can twerk to it, then perfect!
What is your favorite movement or Olympic lift? least favorite?
Favorite movement: I really enjoy double unders because it’s a great calf workout. And I need some muscle down there haha. Least favorite would have to be thrusters because it’s thrusters.
What is one fun fact that we may not know about you?
I love Astronomy. Stars, planets, wormholes. Anything extraterrestrial. It’s fascinating exploring and learning about the unknown. Also, i’d like to be a vampire of an elf (Lord of the Rings style) to be immortal. If anyone knows anyone let me know!
Outside of CrossFit what is one of your favorite hobbies or things to do?
I absolutely love to sing and dance, hiking, gaming, and long walks on the beach (wink). But my absolute favorite hobby is spending time with my family. I can’t get enough of them!
What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
Proudest CrossFit moment would have to be finally getting the butterfly pull-up!! The rush of excitement just makes you feel like you can do anything! On to conquering the next movement – muscle-ups!
A great big THANK YOU to all those that contribute into creating such an awesome atmosphere to, not only workout in, but a place to hangout overall. A place where we share struggle, and achieve feats we thought we would never accomplish. From the coaches to staff to fellow members – you all are just great! What a joy to be a part of this family! LONG LIVE DESERT DEVIL CROSSFIT!
