Mohammad has been with us for about 2 years. He started CrossFit because he knew that exercising would be the catalyst for him to stop smoking. How cool is that? Growing up in Kuwait he started smoking at a very young age. He came here to the US to go to school and is in the Engineering program at NMSU and is due to graduate very soon!
Over the last two years he has improved so much in his strength and conditioning. He participated in our first weight lifting program and made some really great improvements. Mohammad works hard in every work out and always makes sure he understands exactly what he should be doing and how he should do it to get the most out of it. We have watched him go from doing ring rows to now mastering the kipping pull up, after successfully struggling through MANY work outs doing ALL his pull-ups strict! That is determination!! He is also ready to participate in his first competition. This is so exciting for us here at Desert Devil CrossFit. To watch our members go from the goal of quitting smoking to wanting to participate in a competition, now that is some amazing lifestyle changes!
Way to go Mohammad you have been so fun to watch; we love your sense of humor and how you share your culture with us here and trying to con your friends to come in with you! LOL
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Mohammad Alazemi, and I was born and raised in Kuwait. When I finished high school, I flew right away here in the US in 2013, yes I was 18. I studied English at Cal Poly Pomona for 1 year and a half then transferred here in Las Cruces in 2015 to start my bachelor in Engineering.
How long have you been with us at DDCF and what made you walk in these doors?
It’s been a year and a half. I started at the end of 2017. A friend of mine was telling me about CrossFit because I wanted to quit smoking, yes I was an addicted smoker and the fact that I started smoking when I was 9 years old! He was telling me how it is challenging and tough. I did my research and finally found DDCF. I always regretted that I did not start sooner because it did change a lot in me.
Do you remember your first workout and how you felt after?
Oh my gosh! And how could I forget that day? I was ready to go home just after the warm up. The workout was a little bit of introduction that consisted of air squats, wall balls, running, and push ups. Right after I finished, I had dizziness. I could barley see what’s in front of me, and yes I threw up in the restrooms. I was like, I will never come back ever! But I ended up coming the next day.
If you could design the perfect workout for yourself what would it be?
Well, I would combine some running and strength stuff. Maybe start with a 800 m run then 3 rounds of 21 snatches, 15 pull ups, 9 burpee box jumps then end it with another 800 m run.
What animal best represents you today?
I’ve been thinking of anyone that might represent me, but… I have no clue xD. However, my family used to call me Panda when I was a kid, some still call me that. And don’t ask me why because I don’t even know!
If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Everyday I have another best song. So I don’t have one in specific, however, I would pick Hall of Fame!
What is your favorite movement or Olympic lift? least favorite?
Well, there are 2 movements that I get excited when I see them in the board, and they are snatch and squat clean. Thruster is my least favorite.
What is one fun fact that we may not know about you?
So in my first quarter at Cal Poly Pomona, our teacher asked us to write a paragraph. I wrote about my family and how my mom loves cooking, but I misspelled “cook”(I guess you already found out how I misspelled it). My classmates were laughing and I had no idea until I translated it! Here, at NMSU, our Head department’s name is Pines(no, don’t worry I did not make that mistake again!). So when I write him an email, I always check the spelling on his name, every single time. I was always laughing because imagine if a student writes an official email to his Head department starting with, Hello Dr. Penis! I think that would be my last email at NMSU!
Outside of CrossFit what is one of your favorite hobbies or things to do?
One of my favorite hobbies is volleyball.
What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
My proudest crossfit moment ever is when I ran 1 mile for the first time in my life. As you know, it’s extremely hard to run for smokers. I remember in my first week at crossfit, we had a 400 m run. I only ran half way, which is about 200 m, and stopped and started coughing. Then I completed the rest of the way walking. So I was truly proud of myself on that day.
DDCF became my family. I don’t only come here to workout, but also to hang out and just have a good time. I love you all.
