This is Matt G AKA J Mike AKA Douglas lol! He has been with us for a bit over a year. Matt had no experience with CrossFit when he started with Desert Devil CrossFit, yet he has quickly acquired many skills while with us and won our double under challenge. Matt is a staple in the 4:30 pm class and we can always count on some sweet dance moves and good laughs when he is around. Matt has a ridiculously fun sense of humor and a heart full of kindness, compassion and sense of family, a true joy to have around! Thanks Matt!
Hi, Everyone. My name is Matt, but you might better know me as “J Mike.” Short story behind the nickname because everyone asks. For roughly, oh, 3 months, Julie used to mistakenly call me by any name but Matt. One day, I told her a story about when I was 3-years old that involved the name Jay Michael. Somehow, she can remember the name J Mike, so her and the 4:30 crew (shout out to the best class!) have latched on to the nickname. I’m originally from Montana, but I’ve been in New Mexico for…. a few years…. and really love the state. Right now, I’m a PhD candidate in Biology at NMSU. My dissertation is on using genetic-based methods to monitor black bear populations in the Southwest. If anyone is interested in talking about wildlife, feel free to give me a shout. I’d be more than happy to talk to the point you’ll likely be sick of listening to me.
I started with DDCF in October 2017. I decided to check the place out because I was getting bored with my old work-out routine and wanted to be pushed each workout. Plus, I needed to work more cardio into my regimen, but I’m not a big fan of running and ellipticals are boring.
I don’t remember the specifics, but I believe it was a workout that involved either power cleans or hang cleans. All I could think during the workout was, “Dang, I haven’t done these lifts since high school.” Afterwards, my legs were a bit wobbly, but the experience was great, and I knew I was hooked.
Double unders, pushups, and back squats. I’m not picky about the rep or weight scheme.
What animal best represents you today?
We joke in the wildlife biology community that you slowly turn into your study species. Therefore, I’m going to go with a black bear, which seems fitting. My noise and stomach usually drive what I’m doing for the day, and I tend to put a few extra pounds on for my relatively inactive state during the winter.
I enjoy bench press because I have that short arm advantage. My favorite Olympic lift is clean and jerk. My least favorite lift is the deadlift. My back usually says, “Lolz, you’re going to regret this” and that’s frustrating.
Most folks don’t know that I’m a high school basketball official. So, if anyone has attended a local high school basketball game, you’ve probably yelled at me. If you disagreed with one of my calls, don’t worry, according to the crowd I’m always 50% wrong any given call.
Most often I’ll be participating in a combination of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, birding, or backpacking.
Successfully, completing my first bar muscle up and completing the Open are probably my proudest moments. I’d encourage anyone that’s interested in participating in the Open to give it a shot this year
I have a lot of people to be thankful for during my time at DDCF. First, Julie, Jeremy, Dominic, and Jess have been great 4:30 coaches and workout partners. You all are always trying to help me get better in every aspect of fitness and life. Kelsey, you’re a great coach, too! Especially, that one time I showed up to 5:30 am class and you made sure I didn’t have to work out by myself. Big thanks for that one! To the 4:30 class folks, you’re the best and I’m lucky to call all of you friends. I don’t think I’d be where I’m at today if you weren’t pushing me during the workouts.
