Gina has been with us for almost 2 years. She has been a constant presence since November of 2016 and is always working to improve quietly in the corner. But don’t let her see you looking! Even during her rehab after her ACL injury and surgery about a year ago, she would come in and do the work. Constantly working effectively to get her strength and ROM back, pushing just enough to get back safely to get back where she was before she got hurt.
Recently she joined a remote challenge with her brother’s gym in Florida, focusing on nutrition and consistency in the gym with some benchmark workout tests. Gina has proven she can be silent but deadly in a rather impressive way, by winning that challenge with the best improvements in body composition meaning the best ratio of bodyfat lost and muscle mass built, along with some major PR’S on her dead lift, back squat and press, as well as her jerk last week.
She is always helpful, and pleasantly sarcastic, and willing to put her head down and do the work!
She has been a joy to have around since the get go. Thanks for being part of our DDCF family!
Tell us a little about yourself?
Well I’m Gina, born and raised right here in little Las Cruces.
I currently work for the Arrowhead Center at NMSU
I love attention, especially when coaches are watching me. I’m not known at all for bailing in the middle of lift if I get the slightest hint of someone watching me (this is a joke; I 100% do this at least twice a week)
How long have you been with us at DDCF and what made you walk in these doors?
I started at DDCF in November 2016.
My brother has a big hand in my CrossFit Journey, he has been involved in CrossFit for years and he kept encouraging me to give it a try. That’s something I’m really grateful for.
With years of being a competitive and collegiate soccer player I was looking for something that offered the same level of competitiveness and camaraderie.
Do you remember your first workout and how you felt after?
For some reason Fran keeps coming to mind. I think that was my first or second workout in the regular class… I felt like everyone feels after Fran… Death… just Death
And then I came back the next day for more.
If you could design the perfect workout for yourself what would it be?
I like those long tedious workouts. Something with running, box jumps, cleans, and something on the rig just for added fun.
What animal best represents you today?
I fluctuate between a bull in a china shop and striving to live the life of either one of my dogs (because let’s be honest, they have it MADE). Just look at these knuckleheads…
If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Missy Elliot “For My People” is my jam!
What is your favorite movement or Olympic lift? least favorite
Least Favorite: Overhead squats – I always feel like I’m going to fall over but I can never tell if I’m going to fall forward or backward
What is one fun fact that we may not know about you?
Up until I was 5 I only spoke Spanish and didn’t know a lick of English.
Outside of Crossfit what is one of your favorite hobbies or things to do?
I love walking my dogs and being outside with them. I also enjoy playing soccer, kayaking, floating the river, and having beers on a patio.
What is your proudest Crossfit moment?
There’s so many! I think my proudest moment, so far anyway, has been shaving almost 10 minutes off my time for Kelly (shout-out to Jess and Matt G for doing it with me, I think they’re still mad at me for it).
I can’t say enough about this community and what DDCF means to me.
Especially this past year with blowing my knee out and having surgery; I always had someone from DDCF reaching out to me and making sure I got to the gym, including me in workouts, and making sure I was staying healthy (mentally as well as physically). You all played a major role in my recovery. I’m so proud to say that not only am I back to 100% I’m actually stronger now than I was before the injury.
There’s still so much I want to do when it comes to CrossFit – I vow to get one damn pullup in… stringing together more toes to bars and double-unders. Moving up in weights
It’s amazing the type of environment Julie and Jer have built at DDCF. Walking into the gym is the highlight of my day and I’m so grateful I get to share it with you all!
